11 - 28 March 2010
150x100 continues Stormie’s theme of examining the fragility of life and for the first time in many years sees the introduction of colour into some of his work.
Gritty urban icons such as The Central Park Snack Shops, Yellow Cabs and Phone Boxes are set alongside Stormie’s characters to reflect the relationship between these inanimate objects and human interaction
“In many ways I see parallels between these isolated objects and people in terms of impacting on our perceptions of a City. Like people they add character and layers to your journey. They experience interspersed, fleeting human interaction that over time, gives them a sense of place and belonging in the environment,” he said.
150x100 depicts Stormie’s postcards from New York spanning three

Michael Jeffery Human Behaviour
My work reflects the human constructed environment, dominated by structure, control and power,a place where nature is given little importance. The paintings are essentially collages of dried acrylic paint skins on canvas. The technique allows me to create effects of peeling paint, scratches and marks indicating age, weathering, accidents, vandalism and other human activities. These effects are intended to act as metaphors for interpretation. ‘In Her Image’
My love of art began in 1996 when I travelled to Veneto in Northern Italy as a teenage exchange student. I lived with a family in the little town of Marostica and studied at the Nove Art Institute.
During those fifteen months I discovered a love for art, history, language and my heritage, it was the moment in my journey when Italia became my ‘true north’ and a constant thread of inspiration in my practice.
The exhibition is an extension of ideas initiated during my Honours Degree in which I explored the concept of ‘literature as a source of inspiration for visual art’.
My thesis focussed specifically on particular characters within Dante Alighieri’s 14th century masterpiece, ‘The Divine Comedy’ and more recently my fascination with literature and ‘the narrative’ has evolved to also encompass

"For this collection I went looking for landscapes to which I have no parochial attachment. I used photography, travel and time as intermediaries between the first hand experience and the making of the resultant paintings. The process, then, became one of reselecting and redescribing, so that the photographs themselves rather than their subj

Vayu
The soul remains the same.....
15th - 28th October
Figurative artist, Vayu has completed a collection of more than twenty drawn paintings on canvases that measure up to two metres tall for his exhibition . The canvases feature life size figure drawings that look out the picture window with an awareness that they are the topic of conversation.
Vayu refers to a wide range of identities, from the famous and fabulous to the humble and forgotten, often using them to represent archetypal images which he references in titles such as, ‘the outlaw’, ‘the vagrant’ ‘the saint’ and ‘the queen’. Vayu is less concerned with the political position of the identities he selects to draw, wanting instead to show his audience that despite the obvious differences there is this deeper level which connects us all. Vayu suggests that &l

Artist Statement
In music, sampling is the process of taking a pre-existing piece of recorded material and reusing it to create something new yet undeniably familiar. It’s a way of cutting and pasting an interesting lyric or break to be born a new in a different context.
Originally born out of necessity, patchwork was a way of making fabrics last longer. Once a garment was worn out, it was cut into patches and sewn together with other pieces of fabric to create a “new” useful item.
A collage, from the French word coller; meaning to stick, is a collection of disparate items combined to create something new. While my practice is primarily painting based, I employ collage and assemblage techniques to create layers of imagery, text and motif.
Much like a musical sample or patchwork fabric, I reuse and recycle previous works and canvas, cutting them up and casting them amongst new landscapes. I refer to the

ARTIST'S STATEMENT
UNASSAILABLE TRUTHS derives from 4 paintings in the exhibition.
The paintings are an interpretation of aspects of a particular type of human relationship,
And the ‘truth’ is really an ‘opinion’ delivered by a figure of authority (parent, teacher, priest)
to one who accepts the pronouncement (often a judgment of character) without question,
the unquestioning acceptance consolidates as ‘unassailable truth’.
Often these ‘truths’ influence the direction of people’s lives- all their lives.
Unmasking the 'truth' to reveal it as mere ‘opinion’ is often a titanic struggle.
