Artists Statement……
My works are like a fragment of a tale or a moment in time; like looking through a viewfinder and seeing a minute portion of the wider view. What happens beyond the canvas is anyone’s guess.
My practice is geared towards process versus product, the final outcome of my work is never completely visualized or imagined and begins its life as a simple sketch drawn in pen and ink. The works resolve upon completion, as whimsical, layered dioramas imbued with narratives of the many experiences of human life, and how our childhood shapes our present. The characters within the paintings will grow and expand with the ending like a good book; a complete surprise.
The pleasures in life, the experiences we have which we often forget about, and those firmly imprinted, those that make us happy, that make us human, and those which we imagine and build within ourselves and dream are all woven within the fabric of my paintings.
Walking in the rain and not caring, patting strange dogs, getting cowlicks from cows and having enough time in the day to watch ants decimate a dead insect. Building cubby houses because you can, hot baths on cold nights, waiting for a loved one to come home, being unsure of yourself, getting angry at inconsequential things, collecting things that make you feel happy, or nostalgic, or sad, getting tongue tied and blushing furiously .
Referencing fairytales and fables that I was moved by as a child, as well as the animals, plants and trees that I surround myself with I create narrative paintings whose stories are allowed to be expanded upon by the viewer. After all, everyone’s life experiences are different; everyone has their own tale, their own story, their own view.
My work is the culmination of everything I have ever seen and experienced, and a lot that I daydream about.
